Weddings have changed. You have to change how you plan a wedding, especially if it’s a smaller wedding.

Let’s be clear. Smaller in this post means guest count. In no way is it any less significant or lacking in any way, detail and special moments, except there are fewer people attending.

As an engineer, I love numbers and techie stuff, so forgive me if this seems like an accounting class ! Fact is, there are some costs which vary depending on how many people show up, such as the number of dinners. Other costs do not change with the guest count, such as the need for an officiant, your dress (OMG don’t compromise here !), the photographer, videographer, and, the make it or break category, the DJ. In accounting terms, these are fixed costs, meaning you either have them or not, not half a dress, half an officiant… you get that, right?

So, when budgeting (I don’t like that word), when allocating the money you’re investing in your smaller wedding, you need to set aside what it costs to get the fixed cost vendors first, or you won’t get the results and the memories you were hoping for.

Most couples start by booking a venue, and have now “spent” half their entire wedding bank roll and have an entire “rest of the wedding” to plan and pay for. No wonder it’s so stressful with a date set, time ticking, a million things to do, for a wedding of any size, especially smaller weddings, where there’s a preconceived notion that it will cost less, insofar as everything costs less and be easier to plan. In fact, only the food and beverage and a few other items are less. The fixed cost vendors are… well, fixed. And, there should be all the same beautiful and lovely wedding elements. They have to be able to entertain and keep the guests involved, having fun and staying till the end, or the whole investment will seem like a waste of money. It’s the same equipment, same time, same setup… there’s really no where to cut corners that legitimately reduce the cost, yet many couples take on serious risk associated with a cheap DJ, or DIY their music, only to find out it doesn’t work, and still need the sound equipment with which they’re not familiar, and trust me, it gets much worse from there.
